Biography

Ken Jackson, born in Montreal and raised in Toronto, received his degrees from the University of Toronto: BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science in 1973, MSc in Computer Science in 1974, and PhD in Computer Science in 1978. He spent several years as a Gibbs Instructor and visiting Assistant Professor at Yale University's Computer Science Department, returning to the University of Toronto in 1981 as an Assistant Professor. He became an NSERC University Research Fellow and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1986 and Full Professor in 1992. He served as Associate Chair for Graduate Studies from July 1, 2002, to June 30, 2005. After retiring from the department in 2020, he remained active in research. His primary research interest lies in numerical computation, particularly in the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and associated problems in linear and nonlinear algebra. His focus is on parallel methods for initial-value problems (IVPs) and boundary-value problems of ODEs, with an interest in applying numerical methods to practical problems such as computational finance, medical imaging, and gene regulatory networks. His past projects have included numerical methods for weather forecasting, climate modeling, and air quality modeling.
