Biography

Kenneth Rijsdijk is an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) at the University of Amsterdam. He conducts research in biogeography focusing on the interactions between humans and landscapes in island ecosystems, which are often fragile and highly threatened. In 2005, he, along with colleague Frans Bunnik, uncovered a mass grave of dodos and other extinct species on the volcanic island of Mauritius. This discovery led to insights into how evolution in island flora and fauna is altered by human activities. Rijsdijk studies how geologic and climatic changes, along with human impacts, affect island species over time. Furthermore, he examines nature reserves in the Netherlands, which function similarly to islands, looking at how nutrient flows influence the ecosystem. He is deeply interested in how ecological structures can aid agricultural landscapes in maintaining biodiversity. Rijsdijk has authored a book discussing the multiple roles of hedges in ecosystems and is actively involved in several scientific societies related to earth sciences and biogeography.
