Biography

Kenneth P. Roos is an Emeritus Adjunct Professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, specializing in the physiological assessment of basic and translational cardiac function. He received an AB in Applied Physics from the University of California at San Diego in 1971, a Master’s degree in Biology from San Diego State University in 1974, and a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of California, Davis in 1978. His thesis focused on skeletal muscle function using innovative light diffraction techniques. Following this, he began postdoctoral research in cardiovascular physiology at UCLA. In the 1980s and 1990s, he developed computer-interfaced optical imaging techniques for studying cardiac myocytes derived from transgenic models. In 1990, he became the manager of the Department of Physiology teaching lab and was later appointed as an Adjunct Associate Professor in 1992. Roos directed the UCLA Mouse Physiology Core Lab starting in 1998, focusing on evaluating cardiac function in rodent models of disease. His research emphasizes the role of the sodium-calcium exchanger in cardiac pathologies and the application of translational studies to improve outcomes after myocardial infarction. He has made significant contributions to understanding cardiac physiology and treatment strategies through various disease models.
