Biography

Kenneth Smith's research aims to increase the understanding of inflammation in the central nervous system and its role in causing disability in diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS). This knowledge is utilized to develop new treatment strategies, particularly for progressive MS. With a background in physiology, Smith conducted his PhD under Ian McDonald at Queen Square, focusing on the conduction of remyelinated central nerve fibers. He also engaged in post-doctoral research with Hugh Bostock and Tom Sears at Queen Square. His experience includes five years in the USA, where he worked in Chuck Schauf and Floyd Davis’s group on biophysics and nodal voltage clamp. After moving to Virginia, he focused mainly on the peripheral nerve department of reconstructive plastic surgery and gained immunology experience under Richard Hughes at Guy’s Hospital in London. Over a span of 20 years at Guy’s (which later merged with King’s), he became the Head of the Department of Neuroinflammation at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology in 2020. He continues to research the mechanisms responsible for slowly progressive disability and neurodegeneration, particularly in grey matter atrophy, while developing neuroprotective treatments.
