Biography

Kenneth Weiss is an Emeritus Evan Pugh Professor in the Eberly College of Science at Penn State University. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan in 1972 and a B.A. at Oberlin College in 1963, followed by postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan. His research has focused on the genetic basis of biological variation and evolution, specifically investigating the genetic determinants of diabetes susceptibility among Amerindians and the influence of genetic variation on cardiovascular disease. He has a broad interest in the genetic basis of morphological traits significant to vertebrate evolution, particularly those represented in the fossil record, such as the skeleton and the complex, segmentally differentiated mammalian dentition. Weiss is also actively involved in biogeography and biodemography, studying the determinants of age-patterns of traits related to longevity and fitness. He has organized efforts to sample the human genome globally to address both anthropological and biomedical questions.
