Dr. Kerstin Dautenhahn

Biography

Kerstin Dautenhahn is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo, where she holds the position of Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Socially Intelligent Robotics. Her academic journey includes cross-appointments in the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, and the Department of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she serves as the Director of the Social Intelligent Robotics Research Laboratory (SIRRL). Dautenhahn's research focuses on Human-Robot Interaction, Social Robotics, Assistive Technology, Developmental Robotics, and Health Technologies. She has held prestigious editorial positions, including Editor-in-Chief for the Journal Interaction Studies and Associate Editor for the International Journal of Social Robotics. Dautenhahn is also a Fellow of the Royal Society Canada and IEEE, with a history of leadership roles in various professional organizations and conferences. Throughout her career, she has made significant contributions to the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence, particularly in understanding the impact of robots in social contexts and healthcare settings. Her commitment to mentorship has attracted graduate students and postdoctoral candidates to her lab, promoting innovative research and collaboration in the field.
