Kevin Carrico is an Associate Professor in Chinese Studies at Monash University. He is a sociocultural anthropologist who researches nationalisms and ethnic relations in China, Tibet, and Hong Kong. His work fuses ethnographic insights with literary and social theory, examining how nationalisms emerged following the fall of the Qing Empire, which provides significant insights into contemporary China and contributes to developing theories of nationalism and identity. His book, "Great Han: Race, Nationalism, Tradition in China" published by the University of California Press in 2017, studies a grassroots nationalist movement that promotes a vision of China as predominantly Han. Another notable publication, "Systems, Countries: A Nationalist Guide to Hong Kong" (2022), is an in-depth English-language study of Hong Kong's independence movement. Kevin is also engaged in an ethnographic project studying pro-China activists in Taiwan, aiming to explore themes of integration between Taiwan and China. His research is supported by various institutions, including the United States' Department of Education and the Australian Research Council. Kevin has been published in prestigious journals such as The China Journal and Hong Kong Studies, and his writings have appeared in outlets including Foreign Policy and The Age. He is currently accepting PhD students whose research interests align with his work.
