Dr. Kevin Haggerty

Biography

Kevin Haggerty is a professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Alberta and holds a Canada Research Chair. He completed his bachelor's degree in law at Carleton University, a master's degree in criminology at the University of Toronto, and a doctoral degree in sociology at the University of British Columbia. Haggerty is recognized as a leading social scientist with substantial contributions to the fields of policing, surveillance, governance, and criminal justice. His research interests include the governance of risk and the ethics of surveillance. He is the co-principal investigator of the University of Alberta Prison Project (UAPP), which focuses on the experiences of incarcerated individuals. As an influential criminologist, Haggerty has received several prestigious awards and served as the executive editor of the Canadian Journal of Sociology from 2007 to 2023. He has authored and edited numerous books and articles, contributing significantly to academic literature. Haggerty is committed to advancing evidence-based research and addressing critical issues within the criminal justice system. He actively participates in various research initiatives aimed at understanding the complexities of criminalization and the societal impacts of policing practices.
