Dr. Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Lassonde. His primary teaching and research focus is on building science, which includes the embodied and operational carbon of buildings, sustainable building materials, and high-performance building envelopes. Climate change increasingly affects the resilience of buildings in the face of extreme weather events, making it ever more important to reduce carbon emissions from buildings. Part of the challenges lay in market incentives and the behavior surrounding construction materials, particularly in creating highly airtight, complicated envelopes. After receiving his PhD from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) in 2020, Dr. Zhang also obtained his MEng and BASc from the University of Toronto in 2012 and 2011, respectively. Before his graduate studies, he worked in building envelope consulting, gaining valuable hands-on experience in design and carbon analysis related to buildings. He hopes to leverage his industry network for live data collection and to establish partnerships in the field. He is keen on mentoring students interested in building envelope research.
