Khalid Mohamedali is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Translational Medical Sciences at Texas A&M Health Science Center. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University and completed his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Rice University, where his thesis focused on understanding the tissue distribution of the purine metabolic enzyme adenosine deaminase, which plays a key role in the development and maintenance of the immune system. He undertook a postdoctoral fellowship at the TAMU-IBT laboratory of Dr. Wallace McKeehan and joined the Immunopharmacology Targeted Therapy Laboratory led by Dr. Michael Rosenblum at MD Anderson Cancer Center. His translational research program primarily focuses on the development and characterization of targeted therapies for cancer treatment, particularly the development of novel protein therapeutic agents utilizing antibodies, growth factors, targeted delivery of toxins, cytokines, and pro-apoptotic molecules to tumor cells, tumor vasculature, and cells supporting tumor growth. His work includes the development of “fusion proteins,” which involves the identification of important biological targets in cells, expression of these fusion proteins in mammalian cells, and characterization studies in vitro and in vivo models to assess efficacy, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and off-target toxicity.
