Biography

Dr. Khara Sauro is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Calgary, with cross appointments in the Departments of Community Health Sciences and Oncology. A member of the O’Brien Institute for Public Health and the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute, Dr. Sauro’s research focuses on improving the quality and safety of care for patients with Head and Neck Cancer, particularly those undergoing major surgical treatments. Her work aims to optimize the health of patients through the use of routinely collected administrative data to evaluate quality of healthcare, as well as the application of knowledge translation and quality improvement methodologies. She employs diverse qualitative and quantitative methodologies to address clinically relevant research questions. Current projects include evaluating the quality of care for Head and Neck Cancer patients in Alberta, examining the transitions of care for cancer patients, analyzing associations between hospital adverse events and organizational factors, conducting systematic reviews of hospital safety, and assessing healthcare resource use in critically ill patients.
