Khay joined the School of Chemistry in 2023 as a Course Coordinator for the Masters in Green Chemistry Sustainable Technology. He completed his PhD in Pharmacy at Monash University in 2013 and was subsequently awarded a highly competitive Victorian Postdoctoral Research Fellowship which took him to ETH Zurich, Switzerland from 2014 to 2015. He returned to Monash University in 2016. Khay is also a recipient of the National Center of Competence in Research in Bio-Inspired Materials Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Adolphe Merkle Institute, Université de Fribourg, Switzerland (2017-2018). He served as a Lecturer in the School of Environmental and Life Sciences at the University of Newcastle from 2019 to 2023. In addition to his academic roles, Khay is the director of the Australian Chapter of the Controlled Release Society. His research interests are focused on on-demand drug delivery systems, leveraging nanotechnology to create medicines and diagnostic tools. He investigates the use of soft materials that manipulate self-assembly, utilizing amphiphilic lipids to create nanomaterials that can respond to various stimuli such as heat, laser light, and changes in pH. He is also engaged in projects related to the environmental impact of microplastics and works closely with a Swiss NGO to conduct citizen science research projects in Australia and the Pacific.
