Biography

Khola Bilal is a medical student at the University of British Columbia, class of 2026. She has completed her B.Sc. in Biomedical Physiology from Simon Fraser University in 2022. Khola is actively engaged in research focusing on Granzyme B, a serine protease involved in the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Her research interests include the effects of serine protease inhibitors on Granzyme B to halt the progression of AMD. Additionally, she is studying the impact of novel pathogenic Troponin C (TnC) variants on dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Khola is passionate about working with clinical researchers and aims to understand how foundational research can translate into clinical applications. She enjoys learning about clinical research methodologies and how they differ from basic sciences research, particularly in developing novel treatments for patients. In her spare time, Khola enjoys traveling to small towns, appreciating their unique histories and cultures. One of her favorite places is Dinant, Belgium, known for its beautiful canals and cultural heritage, including its connection to the inventor of the saxophone, Adolphe Sax.
