Kieran Flanagan is a Professor of Nuclear Physics at the University of Manchester and the head of the Nuclear Physics Group and Photon Science Institute. He received his PhD from the University of Manchester, where he studied laser spectroscopy. He has worked at CERN and KU Leuven, focusing on beta-NMR and later at IPN-Orsay in Paris. In 2009, he returned to Manchester as a recipient of an STFC Advanced Fellowship. His research is primarily centered on Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (CRIS) and its applications in measuring nuclear moments and charge radii of short-lived nuclei. Flanagan has been awarded an ERC consolidator grant in 2015 for his fundamental research on nuclear properties through laser spectroscopy. He is actively working on projects to detect rare isotopes and has founded Artemis Analytical Ltd to commercialize advanced mass spectrometry techniques. In 2024, he received an Advanced ERC grant for his project focused on exploring exotic actinide molecules, aiming to contribute to the field of fundamental physics and discover new physical phenomena.
