Kieran obtained PhD in malaria immunity from Imperial College London in 2001. He began research focusing on acute inflammation, organ injury, and sepsis at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology at Chelsea Westminster Hospital, part of the Imperial College Campus. Kieran has published a broad range of articles related to sepsis and severe burns injury, particularly the role of monocytes as orchestrators of acute lung injury. His current research is focused on the emerging roles of extracellular vesicles in critical care-related diseases, investigating the intravascular trafficking roles and drivers that modulate acute lung injury, as well as their interactions with extra-corporeal blood support circuits. Kieran serves as the Pathway Director for the iBSc in Anaesthesia and Critical Care within the Faculty of Medicine.
