Biography

Kim Matheson is a Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Carleton University. Holding a PhD from the University of Waterloo, she served as Carleton's Vice-President of Research & International from 2007-2015. Her research interests focus on the cultural and psychosocial determinants of mental health, employing both quantitative and qualitative methodologies including surveys and community-based participatory research. Matheson emphasizes social justice and equity in her work, striving to make her findings relevant and applicable to the communities she studies. She is the founding Director of the Canadian Health Adaptations, Innovations, & Mobilization Centre and currently leads the Indigenous Youth Futures Partnership, a collaborative research initiative aimed at fostering conditions for youth to thrive in Northwestern Ontario. Through her Matheson Lab, Matheson explores critical issues such as intergenerational communication, identity, and the impacts of historical traumas on mental health. She teaches courses on Indigenous Health and Knowledge Mobilization at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
