Biography

Professor Kim Midwood graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Biochemistry from Edinburgh University in 1995 and completed her PhD at the same institution in 1999, focusing on how changes in the extracellular matrix affect cellular signaling pathways in arthritis. She undertook postdoctoral training in the lab of Professor Jean Schwarzbauer at Princeton University, where she continued to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which the cellular environment defines cell phenotype. In 2004, she established the Matrix Immunology group at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology at Imperial College London, before moving to Oxford University in 2011. Professor Midwood has received notable awards, including the MRC New Investigators Award in 2007 and the Arthritis Research UK Senior Fellowship in 2012. She founded the biotech company Nascient Ltd in 2012 and has numerous publications and patents to her name, contributing significantly to the field of matrix biology and its relevance to disease.
