Biography

Kim Hong Nguyen is a scholar of Vietnamese descent appointed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Arts and cross-appointed in the Gender & Social Justice program at the University of Waterloo. Nguyen's research focuses on controversies surrounding political correctness, civility, word usage, tropes, expressions, analogies, and cultural practices. Aims to explore the capacity of marginalized peoples to act and speak effectively, Nguyen emphasizes the importance of using eloquent language and sound arguments within the frameworks of governing systems of power. In 2025, Nguyen was awarded the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Insight Development Grant for a curatorial project titled 'Resisting Chemical Futures,' which reflects on the environmental activism related to the Elmira Water Crisis in the Waterloo Region. This project aims to commemorate community efforts towards anti-war and anti-colonial health and environmental justice initiatives, with an opening goal set for 2027. Nguyen's work has appeared in numerous cultural studies journals, and she has edited a collection of essays titled 'Rhetoric of Neoliberalism.' Additionally, Nguyen actively supports her community as the vice-chair of the Creative Sector Advisory Committee for the City of Waterloo and serves on the Board of Directors for Family and Children’s Services of Waterloo Region.
