Biography

Kim Sawchuk is a Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Concordia University and holds the Concordia University Research Chair in Mobile Media Studies. As the Associate Dean of Research for Graduate Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science, Sawchuk focuses on the intersections of age, communication technologies, and media studies. Her research critically examines the conditions and cultural discourses surrounding aging in networked societies. She has been involved in significant studies, including her ethnographic investigations of seniors using cell phones, which question prevailing ageist assumptions and aim to understand the impacts of digital participation in public life by older adults. Sawchuk co-directs the Ageing, Communication, Technologies (ACT) project, which explores how new media shapes experiences of aging, funded by a SSHRC Partnership Grant. She is also a co-founder of the Critical Disability Studies Working Group at Concordia, fostering connections between media-making and disability rights in Montreal. Over her career, Sawchuk has contributed extensively to academic literature on mobile media and ageing, engaging in various collaborative projects with both local and international partners.
