Kim Venn is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Victoria, where she is also the Director of the Astronomy Research Centre. She was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, and earned her BSc in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Toronto in 1987. Venn completed her PhD at the University of Texas at Austin and conducted postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics at the University of Munich. Venn is internationally recognized for her pioneering contributions to observational stellar spectroscopy and ground-based astronomical instrumentation. Her research interests include the structure and evolution of dwarf galaxies, observational constraints on nucleosynthesis of elements, and she has authored around 250 publications, with half being refereed journal articles. In addition to her research work, she has served on numerous scientific advisory committees and currently represents Canada on the Thirty Meter Telescope Board of Governors. Venn has been recognized with many awards, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering from the NSF in 2000 and the Clare Boothe Luce Professorship at Macalester College from 1995 to 2005. She was also awarded the Canadian Research Chair in Observational Astrophysics from 2005 to 2015 and shared the UVic REACH Award for Excellence in Research Partnerships in 2018.
