Biography

Kim Venn is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Victoria. Her research primarily focuses on the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies, globular clusters, and stellar systems, with a particular emphasis on metal-poor stars. Venn uses stellar spectroscopy as her main research tool, specializing in the discovery and analysis of the oldest metal-poor stars in the Galaxy and its satellites. Her work is significantly funded by the NSERC Discovery Grant program and the CREATE program for New Technologies in Canadian Observatories. Venn and her research group are currently engaged in observational studies utilizing the newly commissioned GHOST spectrograph at the Gemini Observatory to obtain spectra of metal-poor stars in nearby dwarf galaxies. She is also involved in the Pristine survey, which aims to discover and map metal-poor stars using innovative narrow-band filter techniques. Venn is exploring machine learning tools to enhance the efficiency of stellar spectral analysis in response to the growing scale of industrial-grade surveys. Her work provides unique insights into the origins of chemical elements in host galaxies, making significant contributions to the field of astronomy.
