Biography

Kimani C. Toussaint is the Thomas J. Watson, Sr. Professor of Science and the Senior Associate Dean for Research Strategic Initiatives at Brown University. His scholarly work focuses on the development of nonlinear optical imaging techniques for quantitative assessment of biological tissues and novel methods for harnessing plasmonic nanostructures for light-driven control of matter. Prior to joining Brown University, he served as a professor in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2007 to 2019, where he directed the Photonics Research Bio/nano Environments (PROBE Lab). He is recognized for his significant contributions to the field, having been awarded the NSF CAREER Award in 2010, the Illinois Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research in 2015, and numerous teaching excellence awards throughout his career. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America, SPIE, and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and has been acknowledged for his leadership in advancing engineering education and research.
