Biography

Dr. Bertrand’s research focuses primarily on cancer epidemiology, with an emphasis on understanding racial disparities in incidence and outcomes. She is currently a multiple Principal Investigator for the Black Women’s Health Study (BWHS), a prospective cohort study of 59,000 self-identified Black women that began in 1995. Dr. Bertrand is actively involved in epidemiologic studies aimed at evaluating risk factors for high mammographic density, which significantly predicts breast cancer risk. Additionally, she leads research to identify factors that explain racial disparities in multiple myeloma. A strong advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, Dr. Bertrand is dedicated to teaching and mentoring the next generation of research scientists and works to promote an inclusive and supportive scientific environment. She mentors students, postdocs, and early career faculty, especially those from underrepresented minority groups. Dr. Bertrand has been recognized as a leader in cancer disparities research and has participated in initiatives aimed at increasing diversity within the biomedical research workforce.
