Biography

Kimberly Francis is a feminist musicologist and Professor of Music at the University of Guelph, where she also serves as the Director of the School of Fine Art and Music in the College of Arts. Her research focuses on the intersections of gender and cultural engagement, championing equitable and inclusive practices in the field of musicology. She completed her PhD in musicology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010 and has received several accolades, including the Glen Haydon Award. Dr. Francis has served as an International Fellow at the American Association of University Women and as an ERASMUS Mundus Visiting Scholar at Sheffield University. She was a scholar-in-residence at Potsdam University in 2015 and is a featured presenter at the Bard Music Festival's 2021 event, centered on Nadia Boulanger. In addition, she hosted the 30th Anniversary of the international Feminist Theory & Music conference at her university in July 2022, which was supported by a SSHRC Connections Grant. Dr. Francis is currently engaged in a five-year SSHRC Insight Grant project, co-investigating the ideas of French speech sounds in various cultural contexts. She is also co-editing a series of collected essays on creative women in the shadow of World War II and working on a monograph focusing on French white women composers' engagement with occult themes during the interwar years. Her publications include works in notable journals and books, and she holds leadership roles in organizations that focus on women in music and professional development in musicology.
