Biography

Kimberly E. Kurtis is the Jones Chair Professor at Georgia Tech’s School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, with a courtesy appointment in Materials Science Engineering. Her innovative research focuses on multi-scale structure performance of cement-based materials, addressing global challenges in providing sustainable and economical infrastructure. Dr. Kurtis is recognized for her work in combining advanced characterization methods with novel synthesis and manufacturing approaches, as well as data science techniques that enhance the understanding and performance of cement-based materials. She has led more than $20 million in research support, resulting in over 200 technical publications and four patents. Additionally, Dr. Kurtis has made significant contributions to national concrete design standards and durability guidelines. A Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the American Ceramics Society (ACerS), she has received numerous awards for her contributions, including the ACI’s Walter P. Moore, Jr. Faculty Achievement Award and the Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize. She has also held leadership roles in various organizations, including as Chairman of the ACI Committee 236 and North American Editor of Cement Concrete Research, driving forward the science of cement-based materials.
