Dr. Kimberly Murray

Biography

Kimberly R. Murray is an Associate Professor at Queen's University, specializing in Indigenous law and reconciliation. She has dedicated her legal career to promoting the rights and recognition of Indigenous communities in Canada. As the Queen’s National Scholar in Indigenous Legal Studies, she is committed to advancing the dialogue between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Her past experience includes serving as the Assistant Deputy Attorney General for Indigenous Justice in Ontario from 2015 to 2022, where she supported initiatives to revitalize Indigenous laws and expand legal services for Indigenous peoples. Ms. Murray previously chaired the Expert Panel on Policing Indigenous Communities, resulting in the significant report, "Peace, Harmony, Well-Being: Policing Indigenous Communities." She also played a key role as the Executive Director of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, advocating for Survivors' voices to be heard and recognized. As a member of the Kanehsatà:ke Mohawk Nation, she holds multiple degrees, including an LLM and LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School and a BA from Carleton University. Her research interests focus on lawyering for reconciliation, decolonizing legal practice, revitalization of Indigenous laws, and implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Murray is recognized for her contributions to legal education and advocacy within the community, with numerous publications and presentations to her credit.
