Biography

Kimberly Powell holds a dual appointment in the School of Visual Arts and is currently the Graduate Coordinator for the Art Education program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction within the College of Education. She also teaches in the Language, Culture, and Society program and is an affiliate faculty member of the Asian Studies Department. Furthermore, she serves as an affiliate fellow at the Arts Design Research Incubator (ADRI) in the College of Arts and Architecture. Powell earned her Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2003. Her research interests encompass arts intercultural practices, identity, social inquiry, embodiment, public pedagogy, sensory arts-based research methodologies, ethnography, and educational anthropology. Her current research features StoryWalks, which explore walking as an artful practice of placemaking and social inquiry, contributing to a part of an international research initiative focused on walking and research-creation. Powell has published extensively in various journals such as Anthropology & Education Quarterly and the International Journal of Education & Arts, and her work includes book chapters on arts education and qualitative methodologies. She serves on the editorial board for Studies in Art Education and has received notable recognition for her dissertation on taiko drumming, among other achievements.
