Biography

Kimberly Prather is the Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. She specializes in atmospheric chemistry, particularly the interactions of aerosols and clouds and their impacts on climate and air quality. Her work employs innovative analytical approaches such as aerosol-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ATOFMS) to measure the size and chemical composition of individual aerosol particles in real time. Prather's research has significantly advanced understanding of the chemical diversity of aerosols and their environmental implications, focusing on the influence of complex organic species on atmospheric processes. In addition to her research, she is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM, actively mentoring underrepresented students in her research group and partnering with institutions like the University of Puerto Rico. Her work has garnered several accolades, including membership in the National Academy of Engineering and recognition as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union. Prather is also involved in outreach activities aimed at increasing the participation of underrepresented groups in scientific research and education.
