Biography

Kimberly Thomson joined the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University in September 2023 as an Assistant Professor in the Children’s Health Policy Centre. Her research focuses on the social context factors in children's early environments that are associated with their future mental health and well-being across the life course and generations. She is particularly interested in research that informs policy. Dr. Thomson has worked with Child Development Monitoring teams in British Columbia and Australia to embed routinely collected population child health monitoring data into policy and practice. Her specific research interests include investigating the factors in children’s early social environments associated with mental health well-being, examining the intergenerational transfer of mental health through social, psychological, and biological mechanisms, and evaluating the impacts of policies and systems designed to optimize children's early environments to promote social-emotional development and well-being. Dr. Thomson applies an integrated knowledge translation approach, collaborating with community leaders, health service providers, and policy-makers to mobilize research evidence for informed decision-making in health services.
