Kin Fai Mak is the Josephson Family Professor in the Department of Physics at Cornell University. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from Columbia University in 2010 and holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, awarded in 2005. His research primarily focuses on experimental condensed matter physics, exploring two-dimensional quantum materials and heterostructures. Mak's work investigates a variety of phenomena in atomically thin materials, including spectroscopy, exciton physics, strong correlation physics, Berry curvature effects, magnetism, and superconductivity. His research group aims to uncover new physical phenomena arising from these materials and develop advanced measurement and imaging techniques tailored to specific challenges. The ultimate goal of his research is to push the boundaries of our understanding of the two-dimensional world.
