Dr. Kip Wile

Biography

Kip Wile is a professor at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, specializing in music theory. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Clark University, followed by a Master’s degree and PhD from the University of Chicago. Since joining the Peabody Conservatory in 2002, he has accumulated over 20 years of teaching experience, covering a diverse array of courses in music theory, musicianship, and musicology. Wile has been influenced by notable educators such as Relly Raffman, Richard Cohn, and Robert Morgan. His research focuses on music from early 20th-century Russia and France, particularly the works of composers like Stravinsky and Debussy. Wile has presented at various regional and national conferences organized by the Society for Music Theory and has made contributions through publications centered on his areas of expertise. In addition, he co-founded the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic in 2003, where he has played an active role in governance, including being the program chair for the annual conference at Princeton University in 2015, serving as Treasurer from 2017 to 2020, and being elected President in 2020. He currently coordinates the Master of Music degree program in Music Theory Pedagogy at Peabody.
