Dr. Kiran Musunuru

Biography

Kiran Musunuru is an actively practicing cardiologist and a committed teacher, serving as the Barry J. Gertz Professor of Translational Research at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the genetics of heart disease, seeking to identify genetic factors that protect against disease and using that knowledge to develop new therapies. He is a recipient of multiple prestigious awards, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the American Heart Association's Award for Meritorious Achievement, and the Judson Daland Prize from the American Philosophical Society. Elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians, he serves on the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Advisory Council and is on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Human Genetics. Dr. Musunuru has served as Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal 'Circulation: Genomic Precision Medicine' and has authored significant publications including works on gene editing and its applications in treating heart disease. His laboratory is engaged in developing novel “vaccinations” for heart attacks and chronic diseases using gene editing technology, which has shown promising results in animal studies and is currently being tested in clinical trials for individuals at high risk of heart attacks.
