Biography

Kirk Bowman is a Full Professor at the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Joining the faculty in 1998, he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2004 and to Professor in 2014. He holds the Rise & Care Term Chair in Global Development & Identity. Bowman's research interests lie primarily in the fields of Latin American politics and development. He is the author of notable works including 'Militarization, Democracy, Development: Perils of Praetorianism in Latin America' and 'Peddling Paradise: Politics of Tourism in Latin America.' His projects include a focus on soccer and global politics, emphasizing the role of local change agents in marginalized neighborhoods of the Global South. He has received grants from the National Institutes of Health, Ford Foundation, and Fulbright Scholar. As an educator, he has been recognized for excellence in teaching within the University System of Georgia and was honored as the Carnegie-Case Professor of the Year in Georgia in 2008. In addition to his academic roles, he is a co-founder and director of the NGO Rise & Care, which employs innovative strategies for community development that merge high-level performance with global development research.
