Biography

Kiyoko Gotanda is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Brock University, focusing on the intersection of ecology, evolution, and behavior. Her research addresses fundamental questions regarding the origins, evolution, and maintenance of biodiversity, particularly how organisms adapt and evolve in response to selection. Dr. Gotanda aims to elucidate the dynamic processes of evolution that occur over time and space, thereby enhancing our understanding of the role of selection and adaptation in biodiversity. She investigates how human-induced changes, both directly through artificial selection and indirectly through urbanization, affect natural selection dynamics and the capacity for organisms to adapt. Her research encompasses a range of taxa including Darwin's finches, Trinidadian guppies, three-spine sticklebacks, anoles, parrotfish, and East African cichlids, with future plans to study black-capped chickadees. Dr. Gotanda holds a Ph.D. in Biology from McGill University, where she also completed her Bachelor of Science with Honours.
