Biography

Kiyoshi Masui studied engineering physics at Queen’s University Canada, where he focused his undergraduate thesis on experimental astroparticle physics. He received his PhD in Physics in 2013 from the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) at the University of Toronto. During his graduate work, he led radio surveys that utilized hydrogen to map the large-scale structure of the local universe. Following this, he moved to the University of British Columbia as a Canadian Institute for Advanced Research Global Scholar and later became a CITA National Fellow. In 2018, Masui joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Department of Physics as an Assistant Professor. His work in the Synoptic Radio Lab involves wide-field, radio-wavelength sky surveys that develop new methods to observe the universe. This includes developing techniques for hydrogen intensity mapping, which enables rapid surveys of large volumes of space, and exploiting fast radio bursts (FRBs) to probe the contents of the universe. His research also focuses on creating digital instrumentation for radio telescopes, developing algorithms for analyzing observational data, and making theoretical predictions about signals.
