Biography

Klas Hjort is a Professor of Materials Science and Head of the Microsystems Technology (MST) program at Uppsala University. With extensive experience in advanced microengineering, he has focused on telecom applications using optical radio-frequency MEMS, and heterogeneous microsystems comprising glass, ceramics, stainless steel, and flexible foils. His work encompasses biomedicine, especially wireless sensor actuator nodes, and leading both national and European projects in wireless sensor actuator networks. Currently, he coordinates the Horizon Europe project PERSIMMON, which aims to advance smart patch technology for personalized uses. Hjort also leads the SSF project Touch, innovating in haptic backscatter communication and energy harvesting to create a natural touch experience, grounded in interaction design and somatic aesthetics. A founding partner of the National Centre for Natural Hazards and Disaster Science (CNDS), he has authored over 300 scientific publications and holds several patents. Furthermore, he received the Finnish Distinguished Professorship Program award in 2010 and was a finalist for the Descartes Prize awarded by the European Union in 2002.
