Dr. Koen Van Eijck

Biography

Koen van Eijck is a professor at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam, specializing in Cultural Lifestyles and serving as the head of the Examination Board. He is a board member of the Erasmus Research Centre Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC) and is involved with various editorial boards including journals in Poetics and Kunst + Educatie. His teaching encompasses philosophy of science, cultural consumption, and research methodology within sociology, particularly at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. His research primarily investigates social inequality, cultural participation, and patterns of taste in media consumption and leisure behavior, alongside talent development and art perception. Koen obtained his PhD in Sociology from Tilburg University in 1996, with a thesis that explored the impact of family background on education, occupation, and consumption choices. His career includes roles as a post-doctoral fellow at Tilburg University, assistant professor at Radboud University, and an associate professor at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium before joining Erasmus University in 2007.
