Dr. Konstantinos Giapis

Biography

Konstantinos P. Giapis is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He obtained his Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens in 1984, followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1989. Giapis began his academic career at Caltech as a Lacey Instructor in 1992 and progressed through the ranks to become a Professor in 2010. His research focuses on ion-surface interaction dynamics, plasma processing, materials nanoscale confinement, and nanotechnology. He teaches various courses, including Chemical Engineering Design Laboratory, emphasizing hands-on research projects targeting chemical processes. Giapis has led numerous studies on the application of gas-phase techniques in semiconductor surface processing and the unique ability of plasmas to drive non-thermal chemistry on surfaces. He has supervised students in constructing and troubleshooting their own research processes, utilizing fundamental chemical engineering principles to evaluate and optimize material attributes and processes.
