Biography

Konstantinos Kalantzis is a sociocultural anthropologist working at the intersection of visual culture and political imagination. His fieldwork spans both rural and urban Greece, where he has explored themes such as photography, nationalism, localism, tourism, memory, and political crises, all while questioning power, coloniality, and representation. Kalantzis experiments with visual modalities as a way of conducting ethnography and focuses on research themes that includes the use of photo-repatriation techniques and the curation of photo-exhibitions featuring interlocutors’ images. He has a longstanding interest in the problem of Orientalism and seeks to reconsider the European context through the lens of desire, fascination, and colonialism. He is the author of 'Tradition Frame: Photography, Power, Imagination in Sfakia, Crete' (IUP, 2019) and has served as the editor of a special issue on 'Uncertain Visions' (VAR, 2016). Kalantzis is also a co-editor of 'Citizens Photography' (DUP, 2022) and has directed several ethnographic films including 'Dowsing Past' (2014), 'Impossible Narration' (2021), and 'Hospitable Gaze' (2024). His films have been screened at prestigious venues such as the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival (2025) and Camerwise at the University of Amsterdam. His research work has been published in refereed journals like 'Current Anthropology', 'Comparative Studies in Society and History', and 'American Ethnologist'. Notably, he is a recipient of the Royal Anthropological Institute's 2019 JB Donne Essay Prize for Anthropology and Art.
