Kosala Ranathunge was born and raised in Sri Lanka. He received a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Agricultural Biology from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, and completed his PhD in Plant Physiology and Phytochemistry at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, in 2005. Following his education, he held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Waterloo, Canada, and the University of Bonn, Germany, where he received the prestigious Alexander-von-Humboldt fellowship. In 2016, he joined the University of Western Australia (UWA) as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological Sciences. His research focuses on understanding the phosphorus-acquisition mechanisms of Australian native plants, particularly in phosphorus-impoverished soils. He was awarded the ARC Future Fellowship in June 2017, allowing him to continue his research on Australian native plants. Besides his research, he supervises honours and postgraduate students, is a member of several committees, and performs editorial duties for multiple journals in the field of plant physiology.
