Kostas Konstantinidis joined Georgia Institute of Technology as an Assistant Professor in November 2007. He received his BS in Agricultural Sciences from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) in 1999 and continued his studies at the Center for Microbial Ecology at Michigan State University under the supervision of Prof. James M. Tiedje, earning his PhD in 2004. His PhD work, supported by the Bouyoukos Fellowship program, advanced the understanding of the ecology and physiology of soil bacteria through comparative analysis of whole-genome sequences. He led an NSF-funded project aimed at advancing species definitions among prokaryotes, followed by a post-doc position at the Center for Microbial Ecology. Kostas then worked at MIT in the laboratory of Prof. Edward DeLong, where he was trained in innovative metagenomic techniques, providing insights into the complexity and function of oceanic microbial communities. His research interests focus on the interface of genomics and computational biology within microbial ecology, aiming to broaden the understanding of the genetic and metabolic potential of the microbial world and its implications for biogeochemical cycles and microbial diseases.
