Professor Dr. Krista Stelkia

Biography

Krista Stelkia is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University, where she also serves as the inaugural Director of the Centre for Collaborative Action on Indigenous Health Governance in partnership with the First Nations Health Authority. Stelkia is an interdisciplinary researcher focusing on Indigenous health, investigating the structural determinants of health and wellbeing for Indigenous peoples. Her work critically assesses issues such as structural racism, health inequities, and the integration of Indigenous knowledges into health research. With over 15 years of professional experience in working with Indigenous communities, Stelkia has held significant roles, including working as the Chief Medical Officer at the First Nations Health Authority. Since joining SFU in September 2022, her research projects have included leading studies on Indigenizing Health Research Ethics and exploring the intersection of Indigenous health with the criminal justice system. Through her work, she aims to promote health and wellbeing among Indigenous populations both locally and globally, utilizing community-engaged approaches to address complex structural inequities.
