Biography

Kristen Schell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Sustainable Energy program at Carleton University. She specializes in energy system modeling, optimization, and has a dual Ph.D. in Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Professor Schell's research focuses on wind power modeling and forecasting, power systems planning, negative emissions strategies, as well as the strategic behavior of electricity markets and renewable energy policy design. Her current projects aim to amplify the share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources like wind power while overcoming the challenges related to the integration of these sources into the energy system. She employs large empirical datasets from wind power producers and electric utilities alongside numerical weather prediction and earth systems models. Furthermore, she is dedicated to developing novel machine learning and optimization methods to support decision-making in energy transitions at both community and federal levels.
