Biography

Kristian Göransson is an Associate Professor specializing in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Gothenburg. With a BA and MA from Lund University, he completed his PhD in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History in 2007, focusing on maritime trade in the Cyrenaican City of Euesperides during the 400-250 BC period. His extensive fieldwork experience includes being a field archaeologist in Italy and working with museums in Edinburgh and Stockholm, where he served as Curator of the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities. He directed the Swedish Institute of Classical Studies in Rome from 2013 to 2019 before taking his current position at the University of Gothenburg. His research interests center on Greek colonization, particularly in Sicily and Libya, as well as ancient economies and pottery studies. He has led excavation projects in northeastern Sicily and ongoing research into ancient Cyrenaica, funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. In addition, Göransson teaches courses on Greek and Roman history, art, and archaeology, and is actively involved in academic memberships and research collaborations.
