Biography

Kristian Olesen is an associate professor in strategic spatial planning at Aalborg University, where he is a member of the Planning for Urban Sustainability (PLUS) research group. His research focuses on strategic spatial planning across various scales, from large transnational projects to smaller neighborhood initiatives, encompassing sectors such as urban planning, mobility, housing, and energy planning. Olesen is particularly interested in how municipalities and urban stakeholders can strategically plan investments in new urban infrastructures, such as transportation and energy projects. Over the past ten years, he has conducted research examining the link between planning and politics, particularly as spatial planning in Denmark has become increasingly neoliberalized. Olesen's current research involves studying housing associations as strategic urban developers and their role in urban redevelopment projects in deprived neighborhoods, as well as exploring the concept of Positive Energy Districts implemented in Denmark. With more than a decade of experience in educational development, he is the program coordinator for the master’s program in Urban Planning Management at Aalborg University and is committed to advancing problem-based learning in alignment with the UN's sustainable development goals.
