Biography

Kristin Smith was an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at Toronto Metropolitan University. With a PhD in Sociology and Equity Studies in Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto and a Master of Social Work degree from McMaster University, she was a respected figure in her field. Her research interests focused on critical analyses of neoliberal restructuring in health and social services, as well as its impact on educational institutions and universities. Kristin engaged in critical pedagogies within online social work education, and actively contributed to social justice movements, including queer liberation, disability rights, and anti-Black racism initiatives. She was dedicated to community action and aimed to end gender-based violence and promote anti-poverty activism. Tragically, Kristin passed away on October 19, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of mentorship and commitment to social justice.
