Biography

Kristina Huneault is a Professor in Art History at Concordia University and the University Research Chair, as well as the founder of the Canadian Women Artists History Initiative. She holds an MA in Canadian art history from Concordia (1994) and a PhD in British visual culture from the University of Manchester (1998), where she was a Commonwealth scholar. Huneault has been teaching at Concordia since 1999, and served as the university's emerging research fellow in 2004. Her academic work focuses on the intersections of visual culture, colonialism, feminism, and the history of Canadian art. Her notable publications include "I’m Women, Art Subjectivity Canada" and "Difficult Subjects: Working Women Visual Culture, Britain 1880-1914." In addition to her research, she has supervised numerous graduate theses, particularly in areas that combine historical inquiry with theoretical questioning. Huneault's current research questions the relationship between art and visual material cultures in Canada during the 19th and early 20th centuries, emphasizing the roles of subjectivity, gender, and the environmental conditions surrounding artistic production. Through the Canadian Women Artists History Initiative, she promotes research on the history of Canadian women artists, fostering student involvement and collaboration in various scholarly activities.
