Dr. Kristine Stiles

Biography

Kristine Stiles is the France Family Distinguished Professor of Art, History, and Visual Studies at Duke University, where she specializes in the history of contemporary art and artists’ writings. With a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, she has established a remarkable academic career focusing on experimental art, performance, conceptual art, and their intersections with themes of violence, destruction, and trauma. Her theoretical interests span Trauma Studies, German Studies, Visual & Media Studies, Feminism, and Race and Gender studies, as well as International Comparative Studies. Professor Stiles has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses, making significant contributions to her field both in teaching and research. Her publications include articles in academic journals and chapters in edited volumes, with an emphasis on contemporary cultural practices. She continues to be actively involved in research and writing, with her work receiving recognition in various scholarly venues.
