Biography

Krzysztof Janowicz is a professor at the University of Vienna and specializes in Spatial Data Science. He serves as the head of the Department of Geography and Regional Research. Janowicz has a strong interdisciplinary background with roles including full professor in Geographic Information Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he also directs the Center for Spatial Studies and chairs the Cognitive Science Program. Previously, he was an assistant professor at the GeoVISTA Center, Department of Geography, at the Pennsylvania State University. His postdoctoral research involved the Institute of Geoinformatics at the University of Münster, focusing on an international research training group centered on Semantic Integration of Geospatial Information. He obtained his PhD in Geoinformatics from the University of Münster in the summer of 2008. His methodological approach is a unique blend of theory-driven (e.g., semantics) and data-driven (e.g., data mining) techniques to tackle complex spatial data challenges.
