Dr. Kunal Patel

Biography

Dr. Kunal Patel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at Duke University. He completed his General Thoracic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Virginia, having also undergone a General Surgery Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Patel earned his Ph.D. and M.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of Virginia, respectively. His research interests encompass the immunologic aspects of lung transplantation, focusing on macrophage senescence in aged donor lungs and the role of complement inhibition in mitigating post-transplant inflammation. He has actively participated in several notable studies and has received prestigious awards, such as the Vivien Thomas Early Career Investigator Award from the American Heart Association. Dr. Patel also serves as a reviewer for multiple academic journals, contributing his expertise in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery.
